What are Lamaze classes?
Lamaze classes are based on six 'healthy birth practices' that help you understand how labour will progress and what you should do during labour.
In keeping with the six Healthy birth practices, you will learn: Healthy Birth Practice 1: Let labour begin on its own - How to give yourself the best chance of going into labour yourself by recognizing the signs of labour and the right time to leave for the hospital to avoid coming in early. Healthy Birth Practice 2: Walk, move and change positions throughout labour - At our hospital, every to be mother is supported by one nurse all through labour. This nurse helps you exercise in a way that not only eases your pain but also brings your baby down.
Healthy Birth Practice 3: Bring a loved one, friend or doula - We understand the presence of a loved one, be it your husband, mother or mother in law, can give you immense courage to endure the pain. Your birthing partner will be taught how to comfort you physically and emotionally during labour. Healthy Birth Practice 4: Avoid interventions that are not medically necessary - As experienced gynecologists and childbirth educators with a firm belief in promoting natural birth, we constantly strive toward demedicalizing birth by reducing episiotomies and recommending cesareans only when they are medically indicated. You will be informed about each of these aspects so that you can prepare for a positive birth experience.
Healthy Birth Practice 5: Avoid giving birth on your back and follow your body’s urges to push- At Sitaram Bhartia, there is a growing number of women who are now giving birth standing up, in an upright position. In contrast, most of the births across private hospitals in Delhi take place in the Lithotomy position i.e. laying on your back. In the Lamaze class, you will be informed about why one position may be better than the other so you can make an informed choice of your birth position.
Healthy Birth Practice 6: Keep mother and baby together. It’s best for baby, mother and breastfeeding - Initiating skin to skin contact and breastfeeding at the time of birth has significant benefits for your baby. It also helps to successfully establish breastfeeding, which benefits both mother and baby in the short and long term. In alignment with our focus on normal birth, we encourage the concept of ‘natural nurture’right at birth. About 100% of mothers initiate skin to skin contact and begin breastfeeding within 30 minutes of giving birth.
You should attend Lamaze classes in your third trimester so that you are prepared as close as possible to your due date.
